Prince Rogers Nelson (7th June 1958 - 21st April 2016) was a singer-songwriter, musician, record producer, dancer, actor, and filmmaker. He was a multi-instrumentalist who wrote, produced and performed most of the material on over forty studio albums. Considered a virtuoso guitarist, he also played bass guitar, keyboards and a number of percussion instruments. He recorded hundreds of songs in his lifetime, including several big hits for other artists, and left dozens of albums and videos in an archive known as "The Vault".

He released his first album in 1978, For You. He was credited as playing 27 instruments on the album, including guitars, bass and multiple percussion and keyboard instruments. He released four more albums as a solo artist before forming the Revolution in 1983. With them he released three albums including the enormously successful Purple Rain album. After disbanding the Revolution, he released the critically acclaimed Sign O The Times album and the multi-platinum Batman album. He formed a new band, the New Power Generation, in 1991, releasing the commercially successful Diamonds & Pearls album. The NPG in various configurations would perform with Prince for over two decades. In 1993, he changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol and from 1995 he would become an independent artist. In 2000, he returned to the name Prince and in 2004 he staged a major comeback with the Musicology album and tour, and performances at the Grammys, Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame and the Superbowl.

Prince passed away on 21st April 2016.
