The Hammond B3 is a tonewheel organ played by Prince, particularly in the Parade and Sign O The Times eras. It is frequently paired with the Leslie 122 rotating speaker cabinet.
Prince first played the Hammond B3 on the Parade tour. He then played one on the Sign O The Times album (“The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker” and “Adore”), which appeared on the album cover. He also played the B3 on “Hot Thing” on the Sign O The Times tour, as seen in the accompanying film.
The Hammond B3 would become a fixture of Prince’s touring setup, played by Boni Boyer, Rosie Gaines and Morris Hayes. Ken Rich Sound Services later rehoused the Hammond B3 in a plexi-glass case.
